  1. A stem is the main supporting axis of a plant 
  2. that bears the leaves, buds, and reproductive 
  3. structures. It may be simple or branched. The 
  4. plant stem usually grows above ground, 
  5. although some grow underground, including 
  6. rhizomes, corms, rootstocks, and tubers. 
  7. Stems contain a continuous vascular system 
  8. that conducts water and food to and from all 
  9. parts of the plant.
